University Preparation

Oh, it’s that time of the year again when students will soon be flocking back to school!
The back-to-school frenzy can take a heavy toll on the students and parents, particularly for those leaving for college. For some, it’s moving out temporarily. Skip the stress and headaches. Prepare in advance, so students can enjoy the long weekend holiday before diving into the sea of education!

Here’s a list of essential items students should bring with them to college:

Pillows and Blankets
Rarely do college residences provide these sleeping essentials. And even if students won’t get ample sleep time, it’s still best to be comfortable. Don’t forget to bring pillowcases, bed sheet covers, blankets, and comforters in preparation for the cold weather.

Towels and Bath accessories
If you’re sharing a shower, flip flops are a must for health reasons. Towels might not be on top of your list, but it’s something you’ll definitely miss if you don’t have one. Keep in mind to bring other bath accessories you need to maintain personal hygiene.

Cookware and Dinnerware
Students need to eat! Probably, it’s more convenient for students to eat out. But for some, to save a few extra bucks, they prefer to prepare their own food. Bring a few cookware items such as a cooking pot and pan, cutting knife, and a spatula for simple cooking. Don’t forget to also bring a set or two of dinnerware. If the school residence provides plates, cups, and utensils, great! If not, then you’ll be glad you brought your own.

Kettle and other small appliances
College life can mean staying up late to study. Students often depend on caffeine to keep them awake. It’s more convenient to have your own water kettle to make coffee or tea, especially if the closest coffee shops are already closed.
It also helps if you have other small appliances, like a toaster for those who can’t miss breakfast; or a water dispenser so you don’t depend on bottled water for drinking. These are efficient items that can save students from spending.

Computer and/or laptop
Universities and colleges provide these tech gadgets at their computer stations or libraries. But in this generation, students need a computer and laptop wherever they go, especially for late-night studying in their own room.  Bring an extension cord for all of your electronic devices!

Bicycle and bike lock.
Consider a bike and lock especially if you’re on a big campus.

Fan or mini A/C unit.
A fan will help keep you cool in some of the older residences where they may not be air conditioned.

Clothes and shoes
It’s a no-brainer that we all need clothes. But you’d be surprised that during packing, it’s the most important items like underwear and socks that tend to be forgotten. In fact, pack these first before anything else. You might also want to bring along a clothes bin for the dirty clothes.
Here’s some friendly advice: employ the services of your trusted self-storage facility!
For students, find a facility near the college or university. Store items that are or aren’t needed for school, but something they might want to have nearby. They might want to bring more clothes or shoes, but won’t have enough room in their dormitories.  For parents, you can place your kid’s possessions in the facility for safekeeping. While your child is away from home, you might want to use their room for something else, like an office space or entertainment area. Have the peace of mind that your items are safe and protected, and that you can easily retrieve it.

For Laundry
Bring laundry detergent as is really expensive on campus.  You'll need a bin or bag for transporting laundry, and consider a drying rack which will save you money and electricity.

Attending college is already a big change. Moving to a college residence is an even bigger challenge for most students. Don’t let the hassle and stress ruin this exciting and fun phase. Plan ahead!
